It wasn’t flashy, but the Georgia Bulldogs were able to record a season-opening win, 30-6, over the Vanderbilt Commodores at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville.

Riding the legs of running backs junior D’Andre Swift and senior Brian Herrien, Georgia built up a 14-0 lead after one quarter and took a 21-6 advantage into the half.

Following the win, Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart met with reporters and discussed some of his key takeaways.

Gaining 481 total yards – 325 of them on the ground – we saw this offense’s explosive potential. While these totals were good enough to coast to a win on Saturday, there is still plenty of room for improvement on this side of the football. Georgia tallied just nine points in the second half and was 1-7 on third down conversions.

Junior quarterback Jake Fromm was unspectacular, but efficient. Connecting on 15-23 passes, Fromm passed for 156 yards and hit junior wide receiver Demetris Robertson for a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Smart would like to see his defense be more aggressive, but this unit did a good job of making life difficult for the Commodore offense.

Vanderbilt quarterbacks Riley Neal and Deuce Wallace combined to go 16-31 for just 109 yards. Converting on two field goals shortly before halftime, the Georgia defense was able to hold Vanderbilt out of the end zone all night.

Smart’s team will look to be even sharper when they face Murray State on Saturday, September 7 at 4:00PM ET at Sanford Stadium in Athens.
