During his Sunday evening teleconference, Georgia head coach Mark Richt said both Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley were doubtful for Saturday’s game at South Carolina.

Now, it appears senior wideout Jonathan Rumph has been declared out for the contest against the Gamecocks with a hamstring injury.

Rumph, a South Carolina native, transferred to Georgia in January of 2013 from Holmes Community College in Mississippi. He’s missed significant time, though, since his arrival in Athens. He was sidelined seven games last season due to hamstring issues and did not play in the opener against Clemson.

The Bulldogs managed to stay relatively healthy through spring and fall practice except for at the wide receiver position. They’ve got guys decimated with injuries that stretch back to last season.

“It’s a little shaky right now,” Richt said during his Sunday evening teleconference about his team’s depth at wideout.

First-year starter Hutson Mason’s confidence was already a little shaky after his performance against Clemson and these injuries can’t help.

That leaves Chris Conley and Michael Bennett, along with Reggie Davis, Blake Tibbs and tight end Jay Rome for Mason to throw to. None of which are legitimate deep play threats.

“We just need a little bit more confidence,” Mason said during his media availability on Tuesday. “That’s maybe my job to go pat some guys on the back  and tell them to keep their head up and maybe keep my head up, too.”

Mason threw mostly check downs and mid-range throws in the opener against the Tigers, but will need to be effective this week against South Carolina if the ‘Dawgs are going to leave Williams-Brice Stadium with a win.

Mason didn’t have Mitchell or Scott-Wesley in his two starts last season when he threw for for 299 and 320 yards. He faces one of the worst passing defenses in college football this weekend.

Richt said earlier in the week that walkons Kenneth Towns, Michael Erdman and Charlie Hegedus and freshman Shakenneth Williams will need to be ready to play.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo also added that freshman stud Isaiah McKenzie is in the mix as receiver this week. According to multiple media reports, Bobo challenged the offense to improve in the passing game during practice this week.

“I thought we had a great practice today throwing and catching and that’s what it’s going to take on Saturday,” Bobo told the Athens Banner-Herald on Tuesday. “No matter who’s out there, you’ve got to trust what you see and cut it loose.”
