Deone Walker is an imposing force in the middle of the Kentucky defense.

The 6-6, 348-pound second-year player made a splash last season as he collected 40 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack, and played in all 13 games. He earned Freshman All-American honors from several outlets and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team.

Walker’s already proving to cause enough problems that Mark Stoops recently said he had to throw Walker out of a scrimmage, “so we could get a play off.”

Walker, who was named to the watch lists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, the Bronko Nagurski Award and the Outland Trophy, will see double teams more this season, according to Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White.

“When there’s attention and when there’s double teams, some frustration can set in,” White said. “If they’re putting two of them on you, you’ve got to do something special to beat a double team. So, you’ve got to mentally prepare yourself and not forego your technique or forego the defense because you feel like you’re not making as many plays as you were in the past when you were getting singled. You’ve got to stay true to yourself and let the play come to you.”

Kentucky defensive line coach Anwar Stewart said he wants Walker to be the best version of himself, and “kick butt every day.”

“I’m not backing off, and he has a really good opportunity to be one of the great ones to ever come through here,” Stewart said.
