For the second straight offseason, Mark Stoops is reaching into a West Coast NFL staff to find his next offensive coordinator.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network has reported that Kentucky will hire San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello to replace Liam Coen as offensive coordinator. Coen recently left for the Los Angeles Rams, the same staff Stoops hired him from about a year ago.

Scangarello is regarded as a respected quarterback developer, and the new coach is familiar with the same scheme Coen ran in Lexington. Scangarello has already been an OC at both the college and NFL levels.

Before San Francisco, Scangarello was a senior offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 and offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in 2019.

Scangarello spent 2 seasons (2017-18) as San Francisco’s quarterbacks coach after spending the previous season (2016) as the offensive coordinator at Wagner College. He went to Wagner following one season (2015) as a quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons, according to his 49ers bio.

Prior to his time in Atlanta, Scangarello spent 3 seasons (2012-14) as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Northern Arizona. He joined NAU after two seasons (2010-11) as the offensive coordinator/assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach at Millsaps (Jackson, MS) College. He was also an offensive quality control coach with the Oakland Raiders, and also coached at UC-Davis, Idaho (2002-03), Carleton (Northfield, MN) College (2001) and a graduate assistant/quarterbacks coach at Idaho (2000). He began his coaching career at UC-Davis as an offensive assistant from 1998-99.

A native of Roseville, CA, Scangarello attended Sacramento State, where he earned a degree in business administration.
