There are many new faces at quarterback around the SEC this season, including at Kentucky.

Penn State transfer Will Levis has been named the starting quarterback. After the team received the news, Joey Gatewood announced that he would be entering the transfer portal.

Gatewood left Auburn for Kentucky prior to last season and threw for 109 yards and an interception with 62 yards rushing in limited action.

Coach Mark Stoops joined Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic on their radio show “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” on WJOX to discuss his new quarterback and Gatewood’s decision to leave the program.

“Well, I didn’t want him to burn up a full year if he didn’t wanna be here,” Stoops said of Gatewood. “I know it was a heated battle, and Joey put everything into it. Really came out this spring. I was very impressed with the work that he’s done throughout last spring, and this summer he’s worked really hard. With Will, I didn’t wanna put him through that. He’d been through it once. I want to be very transparent. I felt good with the decision, and once I came to that resolution to put Will as the starter I just felt it was right. I just felt it was right to Joey to let him know, and let the team know as early as possible.”
