Reed Sheppard knows a lot more than just basketball. Turns out, Kentucky’s star guard also knows a fair amount about horse racing.

On Saturday, Sheppard was on hand at Churchill Downs for the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. During an interview with Monica Kast, Sheppard was asked for a prediction, and he went with none other than the eventual derby winner.

“I just drew Mystik Dan out of the hat, so we’re going to stick with that,” said Sheppard with a smile.

The pick was a fitting one with Mystik Dan racing under the No. 3, a true homage to Sheppard’s elite shooting ability from 3-point range. It also went down as the right prediction with Mystik Dan winning a photo finish between 3 horses, edging out Sierra Leone and Forever Young in the top 3.

Seeing Sheppard, a Kentucky native, correctly pick the Derby winner was an appropriate sight for the day. Fans of the Derby and the Wildcats were equally impressed, and many took a moment to voice their thoughts on social media.
