Kentucky fan Denise Massey had hoped to see her favorite team in-person Saturday, as the Wildcats took on the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, South Carolina.

Instead, Massey will have watch the Wildcats from a hospital bed.

According to Kentucky Sports Radio, Massey was hit by a stray bullet in a shooting that injured eight other people Friday in Columbia. Massey and her boyfriend Jimmy Brannon decided on a whim Friday to make the 450-mile one-way trip from their Paris, Kentucky, home to Columbia.

“It was really a spur of the moment thing,” Brannon told Kentucky Sports Radio. “I had a wild hair about coming down here, so I called her at 2:00 and told her if she can be ready by 2:30, we can be down there by 9:30. She said, ‘Sure! We can do it.’”

Kentucky Sports Radio reports Massey was shot as she and her boyfriend were walking back to their hotel.

Brannon recounted the entire episode in a post on his personal Facebook page Saturday morning.

Kentucky Sports Radio relayed Brannon’s report that the bullet struck Massey in the cheek area and exited through the back of her head. But Brannon says Massey, who remains in ICU, was fortunate.

“She has no neurological dysfunction,” he said. “She can move all extremities, everything works, all that. So that’s great news.”

No arrests have been made as of Saturday afternoon.

“Denise is one that, just everybody likes her,” Brannon said. “She’s [sic] wouldn’t do anything wrong to anybody, period. It’s a shame that somebody like that has to go through this.”

Kickoff between the Wildcats and Gamecocks is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Williams-Brice Stadium.
