Brian Kelly explained on Monday that he has decided on his starting quarterback for the Florida State game on Sunday, but wouldn’t announce it because he wanted to keep a tactical advantage. On Wednesday, he shared more insight.

“I don’t know if I changed my mind as much as I looked at it a little differently in terms of both quarterbacks competing at such a high level,” Kelly said on the SEC coaches media teleconference. “… My focus was not on Florida State as much as it was on these 2 guys. … We were so close to the game that it didn’t make any sense to tip that off.”

Jayden Daniels has been reported to be in the lead in a competition with Garrett Nussmeier after Myles Brennan’s departure from the team. Kelly said both run extremely well, and both make plays out of the pocket. Kelly said he knew LSU’s starting quarterback about 48 hours ago, and it’s more 1A and 1B.

The former Notre Dame coach is still familiar with the Fighting Irish’s roster, and also had a chance to discuss how it compares to LSU.

“Notre Dame is very talented. They return a lot of starters on defense. There are some similarities to LSU on defense. … They’re ranked 5th in the country. We’re not even ranked. If you look at it from that perspective, Notre Dame has really talented players and we’re in a development process.”
