The Cleveland Browns announced on Wednesday that they have placed linebacker Jacob Phillips on injured reserve following a biceps injury.

With Phillips on the IR, under the NFL’s new rules taking effect this year, he will be eligible to return as early as the Browns’ Week 4 game against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 3, rather than being forced to sit out a minimum of 8 weeks.

Phillips was a 3rd round pick out of LSU in the 2020 NFL Draft. While with the Tigers, he totaled 218 tackles and 13.5 tackles for a loss during his career. As a junior in 2019, he recorded 113 tackles–a team high–and 7.5 tackles for a loss as LSU won the College Football Playoff National Championship.

He opted to forgo his senior season in favor of entering the NFL Draft. During his rookie campaign with Cleveland, he made 25 tackles in 9 games, starting 3 times.

The Browns open their season at the Kansas City Chiefs on Sep. 12.
