Joe Burrow is out for the season, the Cincinnati Bengals announced on Friday after the quarterback left Thursday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a wrist injury.

Burrow left in the second quarter after he threw a touchdown pass and did not return. Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor said Thursday after the loss that Burrow’s injury looked like a sprain. Taylor added Friday that “This season is far from over.”

Multiple reports suggested that Burrow tore a ligament, and will need surgery to heal the injury.

Jake Browning, a 27-year-old backup who had played in only one NFL game, relieved Burrow and led the Bengals to a field goal to start the second half.

Burrow has dealt with a calf injury this season that kept him out for portions of training camp, and limited him once the season started.

The Bengals fell to 5-5 on the season after the loss on Thursday.
