The long wait is over.

The Washington Redskins selected LSU running back Derrius Guice with the 27th pick in the second round Friday night. Guice was the 59th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

“Finally,” analyst Mike Mayock said.

While no scout doubted Guice’s on-field abilities, the pre-draft process reportedly revealed some character issues and raised questions about whether he’d be selected Thursday night or forced to wait until Day 2. And if so, how long on Day 2?

Turns out, the wait was longer than most expected.

Several running backs went before Guice, including Georgia’s Sony Michel and Nick Chubb and Auburn’s Kerryon Johnson. He even went after teammate Donte Jackson, a cornerback.

Seemingly before each pick, analysts reminded viewers that Guice was the best player remaining. But Mayock told viewers that a late investigation was causing Guice to fall.

The character attacks angered many who watched Guice overcome unspeakable tragedies en route to become a star at hometown LSU. They puzzled Guice, whose gregarious personality stole the show at SEC Media Days last summer.

He turned serious in Hoover, though, when describing his motivation and how his experiences fuel his running style, which resulted in 3,074 yards in three seasons at LSU.

“Yeah, there is something behind that. I guess just what I’ve been through my whole life,” Guice said.

“My family is still in it. I guess the reason I run why I run is just to get my family away from it. I don’t want my family in that situation anymore. I’m very fortunate to be here, I’m very fortunate to be alive. I guess I just run for better. For better days for my 5-year-old brother,  for my mom, for my older brother, I run for each of them. That’s where all the anger comes from.”

Guice is the 13th LSU running back to be selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft.
