New Arkansas State coach Butch Jones is bringing some SEC experience to Jonesboro.

Mississippi State Director of Football Personnel Matt Wilson is joining Jones’ staff at Arkansas State, according to Ben Portnoy of The Dispatch. Wilson will serve as the Director of Player Personnel and head up recruiting in Jonesboro.

Wilson initially came to Starkville to be on Joe Moorhead’s staff from Indiana. But he has a history with Jones. An Arizona State alumnus, Wilson went to Indiana in February of 2017 after three seasons in Knoxville at Tennessee. He helped the Vols land three straight top 15 classes for Jones.

Before Tennessee, Wilson was on the recruiting staff at UConn, and the Huskies’ 2013 class was the highest rated signing class in program history.

Wilson’s post graduate career began in the NFL where he served as a pro scouting and football operations assistant for the Arizona Cardinals for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

A report earlier indicated that Jones also hired Major Applewhite as his offensive coordinator. Applewhite, 42, has been an analyst for Alabama since 2019.

While Jones has been an intern and assistant to Nick Saban at Alabama in recent years, he’s most remembered in the SEC for coaching Tennessee from 2013-17, where he compiled a 34-27 (14-24 SEC) record and led the program to three bowl games.
