Former Mississippi State QB Will Rogers decides on CFB future

Former Mississippi State QB Will Rogers has decided to continue his future at Washington after all.

Rogers had transferred to Washington to before Nick Saban’s retirement caused the coaching carousel to start spinning again. Kalen DeBoer was hired away from Washington by Alabama, which opened the transfer portal at UW. Washington filled its coaching vacancy by hiring Jedd Fisch away from Arizona.

After exploring another transfer, Rogers decided to stay in Seattle and play for Fisch.

Rogers told ESPN that the players at Washington were a big part of his reason for returning, and he’s excited to work with Fisch: “I have a lot of faith in Coach Fisch and feel like he’ll be ready to have us compete at a high level.”

Rogers holds 30 school records for his career at Mississippi State. He has logged the most pass attempts (1,876) and completions (1,301) in SEC history. His 12,315 career passing yards are second most in conference history. In 2021, he set the SEC single-season record with 505 completions.

Rogers was most prolific playing in Mike Leach’s system from 2020-to-2022. After Leach’s passing, MSU hired Zach Arnett, who went away from the Air Raid for a more-balanced approach on offense. Playing for Arnett and interim coach Greg Knox, Rogers made 8 appearances in 2023, completing 142-of-237 passes for 1,626 yards, 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

In his second and third seasons with Leach, Rogers threw for 4,739 yards in 2021 and 3,974 yards in 2022. Rogers appears confident he can get back to putting up big numbers in Fisch’s system.
