George Georgopoulos has committed to play in the SEC as the former UMass punter announced on Sunday his commitment to play at Mississippi State.

Last season, Georgopoulos averaged 44.7 yards per punt, and had a long of 66 yards. Georgopoulos had 11 punts go for at least 50 yards, and he also had 12 punts downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. Georgopoulos even before the 2021 season held 8 UMass records, including the longest punt (73 yards), single game punt average (53 yards). Georgopoulos is 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds and originally from Greenville, S.C. (JL Mann). He will be a graduate transfer with one year remaining to play.

“My visit was unreal,” Georgopoulos said, per Gene’s Page. “I am so blessed to be able to in this situation. As soon as I entered the transfer portal, Coach (Eric) Mele and Coach (Shane) Gallant have been in contact me and they showed me a lot of support.”

Mike Leach made finding a punter this offseason a priority and the Bulldogs sealed the deal this weekend.

“Just from the communication alone, that was a big deal for me,” Georgopoulos said. “Getting to talk to the coaches and getting to know me, they showed me a lot of love. Plus, it is at the highest level in the SEC and I am ready for that challenge.
