Greg McElroy joined in with the college football community to remember Mike Leach on Tuesday during ESPN’s “College Football Live.”

McElroy said Leach’s legacy will live on in his extensive coaching tree, and pointed out that the defensive assistants might be surprising. Some of those include Ruffin McNeill, Dave Aranda and Ken Wilson.

But it also impacted McElroy’s own high school career in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“The offense of the day when I was growing up, and still continues to be is Mike Leach’s Air Raid system,” McElroy said. “We took the field at Southlake Carroll with 4 wide receivers and lined up in shotgun 100% of the time. We learned that from Mike Leach, and we learned that by going to their camp and doing things within the Air Raid system forever. That became the offense that everybody in the state of Texas ran.”

McElory added that everyone who played on offense high school football in Texas in the last 20 years can attribute their knowledge of football to Leach and the Air Raid.

“We can all credit our love and knowledge of football to Mike Leach, Hal Mumme and the entire Air Raid family,” he said.
