Hunter Renfroe started his 2023 season with a bang on Thursday. The former Mississippi State Bulldog is already making great defensive plays for his new team.

Renfroe spent last season with the Milwaukee Brewers and is now a member of the Los Angeles Angels. Despite not reaching base, Renfroe made sure to make up for it with his defense against the Oakland Athletics.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Shohei Ohtani was pitching to Oakland’s Jace Peterson. Peterson hit a fly ball into right field as Renfroe tracked it and made the catch while turning away from it.

How did Renfroe manage to catch the ball while facing away from it? Who knows. It looks like the former Bulldog has still got it at 31 years old.

While Renfroe played a great game from a defensive standpoint, the Angels lost to the A’s on Opening Day by a score 2-1. Los Angeles’ only run of the game came from a single in the top of the fifth inning.

Renfroe played in 125 games for the Brewers last season with 29 home runs and a .255 batting average.

It’ll be interesting to see if Renfroe can continue to make incredible catches like this as the season progresses. Game 2 of the series is set to have its first pitch at 4:07 p.m. ET.
