Mississippi State’s 10-win season in 2014 has already begun paying off in 2015.

The Bulldogs were among the SEC’s best on Wednesday’s JUCO Signing Day, locking down three of the top junior college prospects in the nation, including a pair of four-star recruits.

The additions of the five JUCO transfers are a welcomed addition as MSU prepares to lose 19 seniors from its 2014 team in addition to the likely departure of linebacker Benardrick McKinney and the possible departure of quarterback Dak Prescott.

The class of JUCO signees is led by four-star wideout Donald Gray of Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Gray is considered the top JUCO wideout in this year’s class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He caught 55 passes in 11 games this season, amassing 983 yards and 10 touchdowns in the process. His 17.8 yards per catch and 117.4 yards per game both ranked in the top 15 among all junior college wideouts in 2014.

Gray will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact for a Bulldogs team returning just two wide receivers with at least 20 catches in 2014 (sophomores De’Runnya Wilson and Fred Ross). Although MSU’s quarterback situation in 2015 hinges on Prescott’s decision regarding an early entry into the NFL, it should have a much stronger group of receivers with Gray in the mix.

Mississippi State also inked four-star offensive tackle Martinas Rankin on Wednesday, bolstering an offensive line that will lose its top three contributors after this season in Dillon Day, Ben Beckwith and Blaine Clausell.

Rankin chose Mississippi State over Ole Miss, Florida, Oklahoma and others, and could make an immediate impact on an MSU offensive line currently in a transitional period.

The Bulldogs third and final JUCO signee on Wednesday was three-star defensive end Johnathan Calvin, who played with Gray for Copiah-Lincoln last season. Calvin recorded 46 tackles, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 11 games in 2014, and he should find his way onto the field in 2015 even if his role is limited.

Mississippi State will bid farewell to star defensive end Preston Smith and fellow starter Kaleb Eulls, both of which will have a chance to play in the NFL next season. The Bulldogs are still searching for a new defensive coordinator after Geoff Collins took the same job at Florida, and that coordinator will have the ultimate say as to how often Calvin will play in his first season in the SEC.

For what it’s worth, the Bulldogs signed two JUCO transfers in their 2014 class: tight end Darrion Hutcherson and offensive tackle Jocquell Johnson. Both players attended Copiah-Lincoln, and both were three-star prospects coming out of junior college.
