Objectively speaking, 2014 was a great year for Mississippi State. It spent a good chunk of the season as the top-ranked team in the country and won 10 games for the first time since 1999.

But you’ll have to pardon the Bulldogs who lived through it if their memories are less rosy. When you start off 9-0, 10-win seasons hold a little less allure. Then again, if you promised another season of double-digit Ws in 2015, you’d probably be hard-pressed to find a fan who wouldn’t take it.

Several key pieces from 2014 squad — including integral cogs in the running game and the defense — are gone. But with Dak Prescott back at quarterback, and a somewhat gentler schedule, the Bulldogs remain dangerous.

Here’s a breakdown of the Bulldogs’ history against every opponent on this year’s schedule.

2015 record according to history: 4-6-2*
Most unfamiliar opponent: Northwestern State
Most familiar opponent: Ole Miss
Most lopsided series: vs. Alabama

*Based on which team holds an all-time series advantage.

Sept. 5 at Southern Mississippi: There was a time when Southern Miss was the bully in this bygone rivalry, winning seven straight and then 10 of 12 between 1977 and 1988. Last year’s 49-0 Bulldogs romp served as a reminder that those days are long past.

Series history: Mississippi State leads, 15-12-1

Sept. 12 vs. LSU: It’s not a traditional rivalry, but there’s plenty of history between these two; the only team the Bulldogs have played more than LSU is Ole Miss. In the 109th meeting, Mississippi State will look for a repeat of last year’s 34-29 win which catapulted the Bulldogs into the Top 25, where they remained for the rest of the season.

Series history: LSU leads, 36-69-3

Sept. 19 vs. Northwestern State: This will be the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Demons. Northwestern State, an FCS school in Natchitoches, La., finished 6-6 last year, including a 70-6 loss to Baylor and a 30-27 win over Louisiana Tech. Mississippi State is 17-1 all-time against FCS schools, with its sole loss coming against Maine in 2004.

Series history: First meeting

Sept. 26 at Auburn: Last year’s 38-23 win gave the Bulldogs two wins in their last three games against Auburn. Now they’ll try to make it back to back victories against the Tigers for the first time since reeling off four straight from 1997-2000.

Series history: Auburn leads, 27-58-3

Oct. 3 at Texas A&M: Between 1915 and 2012, the Bulldogs and Aggies met just twice. They’ve been making up for lost time lately, combining for 171 points in their last two meetings. That includes a 48-31 win for Mississippi State last season that was more lopsided than it sounds.

Series history: Tied, 4-4

Oct. 10 vs. Troy: In their last meeting (2013), the Bulldogs rolled, 62-7, piling up the most points by any Mississippi State team in a single game since 1994.

Series history: Mississippi State leads, 3-1

Oct. 17 vs. Louisiana Tech: Mississippi State won the last meeting in this infrequent series, 26-20, in overtime in 2011. Though they’ve squared off just 11 times, the series stretches back to 1904.

Series history: Mississippi State leads, 8-3

Oct. 24 vs. Kentucky: Last year’s 45-31 win over Kentucky stretched the Bulldogs’ winning streak in the series to five straight, their best mark against any SEC foe.

Series history: Mississippi State leads, 22-20

Nov. 5 at Missouri: This Thursday night primetime game will be the first meeting between the teams since 1984. The Bulldogs have played four Thursday night games since 2011, winning three.

Series history: Missouri leads, 2-0

Nov. 14 vs. Alabama: The Bulldogs have lost seven straight to Alabama, but last year’s 25-20 defeat may have been the most painful; it knocked Mississippi State out of its No. 1 spot in the rankings and started a late-season slide.

Series history: Alabama leads, 79-17-3

Nov. 21 at Arkansas: The Bulldogs have scored back-to-back wins over Arkansas, each by a seven-point margin. In last year’s 17-10 victory, Dak Prescott and Fred Ross connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to cap a rally from an early 10-0 deficit.

Series history: Arkansas leads, 15-9-1

Nov. 28 vs. Ole Miss: The history here is as obvious as the mutual disdain. Last year’s 31-17 loss left a bitter taste in mouth of Bulldogs fans. The Rebels have won two of the last three meetings after Mississippi State won three straight and four of five from 2007-2011.

Series history: Ole Miss leads, 60-45-6
