Mississippi State’s wild ride through 2014 may have ended in disappointment, but it also ended with the highest final AP ranking in school history.

The Bulldogs moved up two spots to No. 8 on Sunday. The school’s previous high final regular ranking was No. 11 in 1940, when they finished the season at 10-0-1 and ranked No. 9. This is the only the second time since 2001 that Mississippi State has been ranked at the end of the regular season.

Mississippi State will find out its bowl fate this afternoon. The Bulldogs won’t be ranked in the College Football Playoff committee’s top four, but they do have a good chance to be selected for a New Year’s Six bowl game. Those games will be announced at 2:45 p.m. ET on Sunday.
