Mississippi State on Saturday will host Auburn, the Bulldogs’ first game since coming out of the bye week.

It’s also the Bulldogs’ 1st game at Davis Wade Stadium since the death of freshman offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland. Westmoreland was found dead in a Starkville church on Oct. 19. Since then, the team has played at Kentucky and Alabama and have worn helmet decals with his initials and jersey number, 78.

“Sam was a beloved son, brother and teammate, and a tremendous young man with a limitless future. He will always be remembered and deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him,” head coach Mike Leach said in a statement shortly after the news of Westmoreland’s death was announced.

Westmoreland’s remembrance will now extend to the Scott Field playing surface. As you can see below, the grounds crew has painted an “SW 78” emblem ahead of the Bulldogs’ contest against the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. ET:

The Bulldogs enter the game at 5-3, 2-3 in the SEC. They have lost their last 2 games.
