Chad Bumphis appears to be coming home to Starkville.

The Utah wide receivers coach who is Mississippi State’s 2nd all-time leading receiver in program history is being heavily targeted by new Bulldogs head coach Zach Arnett to join his 1st staff as he takes over for the late Mike Leach.

It would be a homecoming for Bumphis to his home school and his home state, as Bumphis is a Tupelo, Mississippi, native who has taken many stops through the coaching ranks since his brief NFL and Canadian Football League career ended.

Bumphis thanked Utah on social media on Wednesday, an indication that he was indeed heading back to his home state and the program where he holds the record for career receiving touchdowns. Bumphis also held the Bulldogs record for receiving yards until he was passed by Fred Ross.

Bumphis, 33, got his coaching start at Iowa Wesleyan in 2016 and also served as a graduate assistant for a season each at Buffalo and at Utah under Kyle Whittingham before he joined the full-time staff of FCS program Austin Peay in 2019.

He was Utah’s receivers coach for the past 2 seasons, helping the Utes win their 2nd straight Pac-12 championship this season with a victory over USC.
