Missouri opened its season with games against Wyoming, West Virginia and Southeast Missouri State, and that allowed the Tigers to deploy a conservative game plan offensively.

Coach Barry Odom admitted as much on Tuesday at his weekly press conference, especially with new QB Kelly Bryant. Odom said the offensive coaching staff was selective in calling designated runs for Bryant, “because we knew what was coming down the stretch. We’ve got some built in as we do every week, and kind of depend and dictate the game on how many we call.”

Bryant has 24 carries for 26 yards this season.

Odom added that Bryant has fine-tuned his deep passing ability, and also his footwork and timing with receivers.

About the game this week with South Carolina overall, Odom added, “We’ll be tested in every area this week.”

Odom said left tackle Yasir Durant, who left last week’s game with a neck injury, will return this week. The coach said after the SEMO game that he could have continued to play if it was a tight game.

Odom applauded South Carolina’s offensive line and its success running the ball last week against Alabama.

About Gamecocks WR Bryan Edwards, the coach said he’s as experienced as they come.

“I feel like he and I played against each other, he’s been there forever,” Odom said. “What a great player and a great competitor. Watching him play last week, he was on a mission. I admire and respect the way he plays the game, not only when he has the ball in his hands, but when the ball’s not in his hands, his competitive spirit and nature, got a lot of respect for him. We’ve got to know where he is, understand that, but also accept the challenge and he’s one of the best ones we’ll see all year.”

The game is set to kick off at 4 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
