Barry Odom calls out Tennessee for trying to poach Mizzou players after 2019 bowl ban
The Missouri Tigers were recently hit with a 2019 postseason ban, and that means that rising seniors can be contacted by other programs about transferring.
Several squads have already been in touch with the Tigers’ senior class, and on Tuesday, coach Barry Odom called out one school in particular.
Per CBSSports.com, Odom is none too happy with the way the Tennessee Volunteers are coming after his players:
“Everybody is going to have a bad day,” Odom said, expressing his frustration with keeping his players from transferring. “You combine that with somebody that — who’d we beat 51-17 this year? Tennessee? Yeah, those guys. They are non-stop reaching out daily [saying], ‘Hey, come here.’ The grass is not always greener somewhere else.”
The Tigers are appealing the NCAA ruling, but while that happens, teams are going to continue to come after their players.
Will the Vols back off? Georgia has already said it won’t try to poach Mizzou players.
Not a good look Coach
And getting gaped by Vandy year in and year out is?
I’ll defer to your personal experience and expertise in getting gaped.
I hope he said told you he loves you
Vandy owns your prolapsed a$$hole.
Lots of Freudian projection here. Amusing and rather disgusting. Nobody self trolls like you, buddy
But again-you’re the subject matter expert on the whole butthole thing
Yeah, I agree. This IS a pretty bad look for Jeremy Pruitt.
How? Your argument lacks evidence. He’s doing everything within the rules and is merely aggressively recruiting. Probably how he got the 2019 class he did. Coach Odom comes off as looking desperate here in his misplaced anger. I get why he’s frustrated as he’s been hamstrung by a compliance issue he’s not directly in control of, but spouting off on a rival for doing his job isn’t the proper outlet for this anger.
All the poaching in the world will not help UT until they learn to develop talent. Its that simple, UT already out-recruits Mizzou annually.
This is true. The development of Thompson into freshman all-sec is a good sign, as is the victory over a Auburn. Not saying we’ve overcome that yet, but these are objectively verifiable facts that point to development improvements.
No one has said they want to go to Tennessee and if they did they sure weren’t looking at playing a lot for Missouri this year so it works in Missouri’s favor if the Juniors and Sophomores get more playing time so they can win the SEC Championship in 2020. Clearly a possibility because they will have two outstanding quarterbacks with experience again … A sophomore and a senior. This year they will have several good quarterback but the key young arm will only be a true freshman.
You’re supposed to say “Bold Prediction” before saying something ridiculous.
Otherwise people will think you seriously believe that will happen.
Reality sounds bold to marvel comic addicts. Don’t break out into hives here as you learn that Missouri has beaten Tennessee 72.5% of their all time meetings. As soon as all these Missouri starters transfer to Tennessee you can write back and say. “See, i really did learn something by memorizing the Justice League membership roster.
Missouri is 5-2 against UT… That’s not 72.5%
Now that’s a hot take
in your defense, I did hear the tutor in question transferred to Tennessee, that’s the kind of hot-takeaways you can get your hopes up for.
Boxster is a UGA fan dumba$$…
You seem very defensive of your prediction that Missouri has a “clear possibility” to win the SEC in 2020. More power to you, though. What is the off-season of CFB if not boundless hope of future victories? BT is right, I am a UGA fan, and I know all too well about “well, there’s always next year…”
Good God!!!! poaching from Missouri???? new all time low on Rocky Top…..Coaches please!!!! just stop it!!!
If you can’t beat em’, poach em’.
Finally a Vol fan that makes sense. Don’t claim your program shops at Dillards, yet dumpster dives behind walmart. LOL Not a good look at all.
If you are so bad you need to poach from Mizzou, you have serious problems. They got the kid from Clemsux, but he can’t throw deep and only looked good in the first place because of the talent around him there. He won’t look nearly as good at Mizzou. Who else is there?
Calling the reigning national champ “Clemsux”? Sucks in comparison to whom? The ‘85 Bears?
No secret that UT needs bodies and is in dire straights as a result of admin and coaching failures. Even though they’ve begun filling a team with outstanding recruiting under the circumstances (yes-2019 class is better than SC’s), they still have tons of holes to fill in the roster. The quickest way to do this is to aggressively recruit transfers and Juco kids.
I guess I have more faith in Pruitt than Tennessee fans. I think he can build a program the way real coaches do it. If you do the math on student athletes that transfer the odds of having a better outcome are far smaller than bloggers here imagine.
The same team that beat you last year…..before the mysterious stadium official sprinted in from sideline to stop game killing all MIZ momentum….funny right before the game was suspended (after monsoon), MIZ was physically imposing their will…South Carolina & their stadium officials are pretty good at runnin that old stadium fgeared for homecookin
Stadium has been their since 1934….their stadium officials no exactly how to make a bad team
look mediocre….South Carolina that is…the whole outfit is cheap!
I think the fact that they’re looking to Mizzou for talent acquisition sums up UT football pretty well nowadays.
It was 50-17. He’s clearly exaggerating to make us look worse than we are.
Which is hard to do.
Odom’s anger is misplaced…he should be mad at the folks who put his program in this position. I guess it’s just easier and safer to be mad at “that other school” rather than blame the people who broke the rules in the first place. Secondly, Tennessee isn’t the only school trying to poach their players. Not by a long shot.
Yeah it’s not just UT but it gets the Missouri fans in an uproar so SDS is rolling with it…
But they are the only ones calling players everyday. You have to admit that is pathetic and desperate at best.
I bet they aren’t the only one…
Not sure why UT is even trying this. UT is banned from the postseason as well almost every year, due Level 1 Losing 7 or More Games In the Regular Season violations.
UT is most definitely not where you want to go if playing in a bowl game is on your mind.
The difference being our “Level 1” ends this year while your bowl ban remains in place. I didn’t previously have hard feelings for Misery, particularly seeing how enrollments have cratered due to your lost battle with the BLM/liberal outrage mob, but the level of crying and smack talk is changing that. Hopefully you lose the appeal.
Smack talk from a rival program! Oh the horror! Make them stop!
Dang. Missouri fans think of Tennessee as a rival program. #RockyBottom
Rival:a person or thing competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity.
Stay in school Bieber.
Where in my post did I say it has to stop? I merely stated that this has caused my opinion to change. You can smack talk all you want, but don’t expect me to turn the other cheek.
It’s a sports site man, jawing is OK.
Never said it wasn’t ok-just that I and likely others will respond in kind. Do you plan to refute my argument at some point or do we continue to debate strawman arguments you post?
1. Never told you to stop, I poked fun at you for being so thin skinned. 2 Never expected you to stop, I acknowledged smack is expected. 3 I didn’t make any argument, let alone a strawman (I don’t think you know what this word means). 4. As far as refuting your statement, sure; Mizzou maybe wins their appeal, but the odds are probably better that Tennessee fails to win 6 games for the 3rd year in a row.
1. Nowhere in the above posts did I state you told me to stop. You were the one who falsely accused me of saying smack talk must stop. 2. You falsely said I want it to stop, nowhere did I accuse you of expecting me or anyone else to stop smack talking. 3. A strawman is to build a false argument that isn’t stated for the express purpose of making a rebuttal. See my previous posts to you and points 1 and 2 as a reference to instances of this. 4. This is an actual example of addressing my argument without creating a false argument I’ve made (aka strawman). I happen to disagree with your opinion, as do many early prediction articles by various media members.
It’s a bad look because he cannot beat Missouri with his own players, and feels a need to resort to trying to steal players from a program most UT fans are very publicly disdainful of. You can’t say Missouri is a trash football program, and then drunk dial our players 24 hours/day. It’s really one or the other on that one.
I can understand why UT is doing what they are doing, if I was at UT I would be doing the same thing. I’m not a fan of interconference player
cannibalization, it’s a bit easier to stomach if it happens from outside the SEC. With that said UT needs immediate help on the line of scrimmage, both sides, they are very soft & easily exposed, MIZZOU has a stable of experienced trench players, I’m certain this is thier target.
I would expect you are right D-line. Not a big fan of poaching other players really but he isn’t doing anything wrong. Funny how kirby puts on his halo since he has no need for players. We are thin in a lot of areas and do need help. if the shoe was on the other foot he would be calling too, and so would odom in all likelihood. You know if you don’t want it to happen then don’t cheat. How about that novel idea.
Or don ‘t hire tutors that cheat for / with student athletes and then try to extort the University for your silence.
Agree, our vetting system is broke.
How can you win if you don’t cheat? the real secret is to learn to draw enough money while cheating that the NCAA doesn’t want to throw the book at you…
Excellent point. If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying hard enough.
According to a 247 article Tennessee, Texas A&M, Auburn, and Miss st. have all reached out to players, and that was a week ago. I would be willing to bet money that every school in the SEC reviewed every available senior to see if they were are an upgrade or could provide depth. What Pruitt has shown is that he willing do everything within the rules to get the players needed on campus. That is nothing to be a ashamed of. The only thing that matters is the score at the end of the game, which TN has been bad at, and Pruitt is there to change those outcomes. If Missouri is upset they should look in the mirror first because they caused it to happen.
So this Senior class ranked 13th in the SEC in recruiting and 43rd nationally. But Tennessee wants to call these guys every day??? You guys almost had me sold on the storied past and glory days of the Vols, but I will never buy it in todays context. First off, UT has out recruited us every year that we have been in the league yet our record against them is overwhelmingly superior. This is a silent compliment to the way the Tigers develop players and finds diamonds in the rough and still beats UT. I could care less if anyone gets poached but I will forever, never respect the Vols after this They talk a good game and hate that we’re in the SEC. Blue Blood, only because of the past, but currently UT is fraud, sham, and a malcontent of a football program.
Blue Bloods are only blue bloods when they are at the top. The school loses their status if they aren’t but can always gain their status back when their time comes. Tennessee made a lot of mistakes over the last 20 years, but the current administration is slowly righting the wrongs.
Oh get over it. Barry is projecting his anger at the NCAA crappy ruling onto UT. Pruitt and his staff are doing nothing wrong. College football programs thrive on recruiting. UT are recruiting players they are allowed to recruit. It’s not anyone else’s fault that Mizzou hired someone to their support staff that broke rules. If Barry is truly upset at Pruitt and UT, he picked the wrong profession.
Kirby showed class and professionalism by personally calling Coach Odom to let him know that he would not be poaching their players out of respect. Pruitt is just so so scummy. Disgusting.
Remember Maurice Smith? Kirby should have reprimanded by the SEC for tampering.
You’re an idiot if you don’t think that the football staff down in Athens didn’t immediately review Mizzou’s roster to see if there were any viable seniors that could help immediately.
Yeah, Kirby is so classy he signed Eli Wolf from Tennessee.
But he didn’t poach him, which is the point of the article. Eli initiated the transfer portal move and was leaving UT, period. He talked to UGA after he was in the Portal. “Poaching” is initiating contact with another program’s player before they’ve announced any intent to transfer.
It’s a little petty to pull what Odom just did. Business is business and UT is doing what everyone else is doing, except Pruitt actually needs the talent especially along the line. That said who really cares. It provides board material and flavor for the 2019 game. lol is kinda funny how easily some people let SDS get them going though.
I am enjoying the budding rivalry between Missouri and Tennessee
Well, it sucks to suck but here we are. I honestly don’t have any hard feelings at Odom for feeling salty he is being poached. I also feel no shame Pruitt and staff tried to poach. It is what it is. Other than that go Vols and everybody else can suck a fat one.
Oh, so much to respond to and so little desire to do so. Nonetheless, I can’t help myself. Odom was shrewd to out UT for poaching talent. Think about it under the circumstances. Very smart — and unexpectedly savvy for him. And ESPN, 247, Yahoo, Sporting News — everyone wrote about this today, not just SDS. Shrewd move, Barry.
And on a related story, according to 247 Vol article today, UT had ZERO players invited to the 338-player NFL Combine, despite top 10 (and top 5) recruiting classes for years — much, much higher than Mizzou, who had 6 invited this year. Vols = ZERO. That’s one less than one and one less than South Dakota State, Elon, Northern Colorado, Morgan State, et al. Pruitt couldn’t even coach-up one 4-star kid enough to get invited? How long before recruits catch on? Hummm. If you can’t coach ‘um — steal ‘um. Baby needs a new pair of shoes.
My thoughts are similar.
Amazing if true. The TN fans will say something lame about how they don’t need a combine. The draft will let us know.
This is pretty poor analysis of Pruitt’s first year development. First, you can’t judge a coach’s performance solely based upon development of seniors whom he had 1 season to develop from a program that ignited strength training and focused on “finesse” over fundamentals. You also ignore the fact that many of the highly touted recruits were gone prior to becoming seniors (UT had 13 total seniors, incl transfers and walk-ons. You further ignore the fact that he led 3 classes of players he didn’t recruit, including the seniors you claim he didn’t develop, to win the first SEC west game any of them had won vs a ranked team on the road. After that, they beat a ranked SEC team at home, improving from a winless SEC season in the prior year. Lastly, one of his recruits went SEC all freshman. Several of these seniors started; therefore, the evidence clearly supports he can develop talent.
I wasn’t talking about any of that. I was talking about a top recruiting school full of 4-star athletes not getting any invites to the combine. A better analogy would be Kirby Smart, who also came from Alabama and also had consistently top-ranked classes. In 2017, his second year, they still sent McKenzie to the combine. Mizzou, consistently in the 40s, sent Harris that year (former 2-star/round 1/pick 22). That’s why UT is poaching.
Their top recruits seem to like the free shoes (a la, Miami) but don’t perform, and the staff can’t seem to develop them. Pruitt couldn’t make even ONE viable player worthy for the combine — and yes, they have 6 guys efforting NFL attention, although no one knows who they are right now. That will place a schools vaulted draft position in jeopardy pretty quickly: Stealing to keep eating.
what Does Kirby sending someone to the combine have to do with Pruitt? Pruitt May do the same but he has only been at UT one season..
“Pruitt couldn’t coach-up one 4-star kid enough to get invited”. “I wasn’t talkin about that”. Pretty sure this is directly speaking to his ability to develop talent, which I refuted with the evidence above, indicating he can develop talent. I didn’t disagree that no one was invited to the combine, but it’s a poor argument to say this reflects on Pruitt’s coaching abilities, which is exactly what you did, as quoted word for word. I agree 100% that Butch didn’t coach up talent, but to extrapolate this to Pruitt is a poor argument at best given the facts.
“what Does Kirby sending someone to the combine have to do with Pruitt? ”
My example was a year one to year one comparison, both being former Bama assistants inheriting players — and top recruits, both in their first year. It’s a fair comparison.
You said in his second year they sent someone to the combine…. Pruitt hasn’t had his second year yet. He might do the same…
So how can you justify Pruitt not be judged on the performance of the seniors he had for only one season while you simultaneously give him credit for developing a frosh all SEC member he only had for one season?
Well he recruited the Freshmen so he may fit his system more then the senior… Also the Senior May have reached his ceiling or take long to develop based on the hold habits taught by the prior coaching staff… Surely you can see the difference in the comparison you’re making…
Take longer, bad haibts**
I didn’t make a comparison, I just can’t understand what justifies Pruitt getting to take credit for the Freshman that had all the tools when he came to Tennessee. That points to good recruiting, not development (yet).
I’m talking the a freshman he recruited compared to a senior he didn’t….
Honestly though, it’s to early to know about Pruitt as he just completed his first season…
I just can’t understand what justifies Pruitt getting to take credit for the Freshman that had all the tools when he came to Tennessee. That points to good recruiting, not development (yet).
Bring in a freshman who does well after Pruitt’a first season and that points to good recruiting. Fail to develop a 4-5th year underdeveloped senior into an NFL player after Pruitt’s first season points to bad development.
The problem is he has only had one season… Everyone is screaming development and saying he can’t take credit for the freshmen he recruited so give him time then …. Development doesn’t happen over night. Especially when you’re trying to undo the $hit show left by the prior coaching staff… Come back to this when he gets two more seasons and let’s look at his development…
@1 posy fake account “UTVol”. He did show development of upper classmen in that the seniors accomplished what I noted above. Getting them good enough to do that but not make them NFL material in less than 1 year doesn’t negate the aforementioned accomplishments. Freshmen also have to be developed, regardless of talent coming in. Of all the five stars, he made fresh all sec as a four.
Kirby is no saint,he simply didn’t need any of mizzou’s guys and is trying to stave off any future Mizzou poaching of uga players should the opportunity arise. I think Tennessee is within their rights and I think Odom is justified in being annoyed. I take it as a compliment that a school that out recruits us is begging for our dudes.
My Mizzou glasses see this as a very strategic move to out TN and mock them a bit. It makes TN look desperate and places Mizzou as a more desirable place. Esp if no one bites. Love it. Barry Odom is playing chess and he wants to fight. Pruitt looks like he’s picking up leftovers. I’m sure Barry would be making the calls if the situation was reversed. Funny to watch Mizzou fans defend him and also funny that TN fans get so worked up about it.
MIZ doesn’t have the trash Tennessee is lookin to burn in their dumpster….maybe try the Columbia east to help?
