Eliah Drinkwitz dialed in to the first SEC teleconference of the season Wednesday morning to, among other topics, discuss the Tigers’ QB situation heading into the 2023 season.

Drinkwitz spoke on 4 quarterbacks Wednesday, but admitted that 3 of them – Jake Garcia, Sam Horn and Brady Cook – have done an outstanding job heading into Week 1. Mizzou’s head coach remained non-committal on a starter, explaining that the battle will likely bleed over into Week 1.

Check out his full comments on the matter below:

“I was really pleased with the level of competition that we had throughout the spring, throughout the summer, through fall camp, I felt like we really had 3 guys that really stood above the rest and I’ve been really impressed with Gabarri Johnson, the true freshman quarterback, I think he’s come in and really been somebody that really surprised everybody on our staff with the way he throws the ball, commands the team, develops relationships with the freshman class. We’re very excited for his future, but Jake Garcia, Sam Horn, Brady Cook, all 3 of those guys did an outstanding job of doing what we asked them to do, none of them had those oh crap days where you just couldn’t play football with them. I think they all handled their business as good as they could. But there’s a limited number of reps and a limited number of opportunities in fall camp, so we’re going to extend the quarterback competition into this first game and (see) the results underneath the lights and we’ll do that until the quarterback reveals himself to our team and we’ll go from there.”

As Mizzou fans know, Brady Cook ran the offense last year. The junior QB threw for 2,724 yards with 14 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 2022.

It’s worth noting that Mizzou has released an unofficial depth chart that labels Cook or Sam Horn as the starter, with Garcia coming in at the No. 3 spot.

The Tigers kick off their season Thursday against South Dakota at 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
