Arizona upsets North Carolina, eliminates another national seed before Omaha
Arizona defeated North Carolina 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in a decisive Game 3 at the Chapel Hill Super Regional.
With the Wildcats now headed to Omaha, Carolina becomes the latest in a growing line of pre-tournament favorites to fail to reach Omaha. Four of the top 5 national seeds — Vanderbilt, Texas, Auburn and now UNC — have now been eliminated.
Here’s a clip from the final out in Chapel Hill:
Vanderbilt and Texas were sent home last weekend during Regionals, so there’s been significant upsets in each of the tournament’s first 2 weekends.
No. 3-seeded Arkansas is the top team remaining in the field, but the Razorbacks haven’t clinched their spot in Omaha yet. They could do so as early as Sunday, but that would mean beating Tennessee ace Liam Doyle. Game 3, if necessary, of the Fayetteville Super Regional is scheduled for Monday.
No. 6-seeded LSU is also one win away from clinching a berth in the College World Series. The Tigers could clinch a spot in Omaha as early as Sunday as well.
No. 7 Georgia was also sent home in the regional round while No. 8 Oregon State will play a decisive Game 3 of the Corvallis Super Regional against No. 9 Florida State on Monday.
The 2025 College World Series will begin on Friday, June 13.
