Former South Carolina pitcher commits to transfer to Mississippi State
Mississippi State added a transfer commitment on Saturday from right-handed sophomore pitcher Tyler Pitzer.
A Pennsylvania product, Pitzer spent the first 2 seasons of his college career with South Carolina. He made 38 appearances with 8 starts for the Gamecocks during that time. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder compiled an 8-1 record during his time with the Gamecocks. He’ll now move to Starkville with 2 seasons of eligibility remaining.
Pitzer was a 1-time SEC Freshman of the Week selection during the 2024 season. He made 19 appearances with 6 starts for the Gamecocks that year, going 4-1 with a save and a 4.74 ERA. Pitzer struck out 57 batters in 43.2 innings of work with 6 home runs given up.
This season, Pitzer was 4-0 with a save in 19 appearances. He struck out 32 batters in 28.1 innings of work, but had an ERA of 6.99. That number deserves some added context, though. Ten of the 22 earned runs Pitzer was on the hook for during the 2025 season came in 1.1 innings against Auburn on May 8. The Gamecocks lost that game 24-2. Pitzer only gave up 1 home run on the season, but opposing batters hit .292 against him.
Still, there were flashes. He earned a win against Milwaukee on Feb. 21, striking out 8 in 4 shutout innings. He earned a save with 6 punchouts and an unearned run in 4 innings of work against Oklahoma on March 15. As a freshman, Pitzer struck out 9 batters in 6.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and no earned runs in a win over Vanderbilt on March 24, 2024. He earned his SEC Freshman of the Week honor the following day.
Pitzer is the 10th player to commit to new Mississippi State head coach Brian O’Connor out of the transfer portal, and he’s the fourth pitcher, joining Tomas Valincius (Virginia), Maddox Webb (The Citadel), and Jackson Logar (James Madison).
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
