Tennessee baseball added a potential 2-way contributor out of the transfer portal on Sunday afternoon.
The Vols picked up a commitment from DJ Newman, who starred as both a hitter and a pitcher for Bowling Green over the past couple of seasons.
Newman announced his commitment on Instagram:
When healthy, Newman has been one of the best hitters in college baseball over the past couple of seasons. In 2025, he hit .419 with 4 home runs in 25 games. He was also limited to just 35 games at the plate in 2023, but he’s posted an OPS over 1.000 in each of the past two seasons.
As a pitcher, Newman owns a 3.6 ERA across 85 career innings with the Owls. He’s struck out 91 batters while walking just 19 on the mound as well. Newman opened the year as Bowling Green’s Friday night starter but didn’t pitch after March 21 due to an injury. His last at-bat at the plate came on April 4.
He’ll step into a Tennessee locker room that will be highly-motivated after the Vols missed out on another College World Series appearance this season. Newman figures to have a shot at contributing both as a hitter and pitcher next season.
