Every year, college football fans around the country look forward to seeing what the latest crop of freshman players who have joined the college football ranks can do in their first year on campus.

Most newcomers don’t get much playing time as they adjust to the grind and schedule of student-athlete life, but some have enough talent to become immediate impact players for their programs.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year award was established back in 2018 by the Maxwell Football Club to honor the best freshman player in all of college football, and they just released their preseason watchlist.

The list features 38 first-year players expected to be key pieces on their new teams, and the Southeastern Conference is heavily represented with 16 players.

Here are all of the SEC players named to the official Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watchlist in no particular order (note that this list includes both true freshmen and redshirt freshmen):

  • EJ Crowell, Alabama RB
  • Jireh Edwards, Alabama DB
  • Keelon Russell, Alabama QB
  • Dallas Wilson, Florida WR
  • Ben Hanks, Florida DB
  • Talyn Taylor, Georgia WR
  • Lamar Brown, LSU DL
