Alabama AD Greg Byrne issues statement on USC game, Pac-12’s decision to go conference-only

With the Pac-12 officially going conference-only for the 2020 season, the Alabama-USC game planned for Week 1 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys, is officially off. Shortly after the Pac-12 made its announcement, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne posted a statement he released to the media.
“As I’ve said before, USC AD Mike Bohn and I had multiple conversations over the last several months, and we were both planning on playing the football game on September 5 in Arlington. With the Pac-12’s decision to move to a conference-only schedule, we will do our best to adjust. What that looks like is to be determined,” Byrne’s statement reads.
The status of the game has been in question for months during the COVID-19 pandemic as it looked unlikely the Trojans would make the trip to Texas. Crimson Tide fans will certainly be closely following any developments on the 2020 schedule. Byrne and the other SEC athletic directors will reportedly meet Monday to discuss the conference’s approach to the fall sports season.
After Sept. 5, Alabama’s 2020 schedule currently includes the home-opener against Georgia State on Sept. 12. UA is set to begin SEC play at home against Georgia on Sept. 19.
