The Arkansas Razorbacks are turning over every rock in their head coaching search. They reportedly interviewed former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald earlier this month. Multiple Group of 5 coaches — Memphis’ Ryan Silverfield, North Texas’ Eric Morris and South Florida’s Alex Golesh — have also been tied to the position.
Alabama defensive coordinator was not known to be a candidate for the Razorbacks’ job, but ESPN’s Pete Thamel linked him to it in Week 13. This, of course, sparked conversation in Tuscaloosa about Wommack’s future. He was asked about those rumors on Monday, and decided to take the high road.
“I appreciate the question,” Wommack said. “But I’m just not going to address any job opportunity stuff.”
Wommack is in his second season as Alabama’s defensive coordinator. He joined the Crimson Tide after 3 years as the head coach at South Alabama, where he compiled a 22-16 record. His time with the Jaguars is his only head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
Alabama (9-2, 6-1 SEC) has to beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl to lock up an SEC Championship appearance and College Football Playoff spot. If the Crimson Tide loses to the Tigers, they will not make the trip to Atlanta and will almost assuredly miss the CFP for the second consecutive season. The Iron Bowl kicks off on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. E.T. (ABC).
