Alabama staffer George Banko is leaving the program to join the Washington Commanders’ coaching staff, according to a report.

That’s per FootballScoop’s John Brice, who notes that Banko will be joining Dan Quinn’s staff in Washington. Banko spent 6 seasons on Alabama’s staff under former head coach Nick Saban. He was expected to be retained by Kalen DeBoer, per the report, but will instead move to the NFL to start the next phase of his career.

Banko served in a variety of roles during his time in Tuscaloosa, most recently as a defensive analyst. He’s set to become a defensive quality control coach with the Commanders, per Brice’s report.

Banko is an Alabama alum who began working for the Crimson Tide while he was still an undergraduate.

The news comes as Alabama is still finalizing its coaching staff for the 2024 season. DeBoer is expected to elevate tight ends coach Nick Sheridan to replace Ryan Grubb as the program’s offensive coordinator. Grubb left Alabama for the OC role with the Seattle Seahawks earlier this month.
