Alabama reportedly interviewed father of nation’s No. 1 CB for coaching position

Before Alabama hired new DBs coach Karl Scott to replace the outgoing Derrick Ansley, it interviewed Patrick Surtain for the position, according to BamaInsider.com.
Surtain happens to be the father of the nation’s No. 5 overall player, CB Patrick Surtain, Jr. But before everyone gets all up in arms over the Tide targeting the father, he’s well qualified. He spent 11 seasons playing in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs, making the Pro Bowl three consecutive years. He’s currently the head coach at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, where he coaches his son.
Surtain’s son is certainly still considering Alabama, along with LSU, Florida and others. The Tigers appear to be the favorite at this point. He has impressive size, listed at 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds, and that’s certainly ideal size for a Nick Saban-type DB. He’s ranked as the nation’s top CB.
Although the father didn’t get the Alabama assistant job, he insists that will have no bearing on where his son ultimately plays in college.
“That was the first thing I mentioned to Coach Saban,” the older Surtain told BamaInsider.com. “I told him I didn’t want it contingent on where Pat [Surtain Jr.] comes there or not. That wouldn’t be fair to him. [Saban] assured me that it wasn’t. He interviewed me because he thought I’d be a great defensive backs coach.”
A graduate of the University of Florida and founder of Saturday Down South, Kevin is a college football enthusiast.
