Rivalries between states are always meant to have a little bit of flair. With Texas headed to the SEC no later than 2025, there’s a sense that there could be a budding feud growing between the Lone Star State and Yellowhammer State.

Less than 24 hours before kickoff in Austin, the governors of the two states decided to make a “friendly” wager on the outcome of the matchup. In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott bet “some of the best barbecue in America” and Lone Star Beer that the Longhorns would take down the Crimson Tide in his own backyard.

As for Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, she countered Abbott’s barbecue and beer with a “guarantee that the Crimson Tide is ready to roll.” What has she elected to put up for the state? Only the staple Archibald & Woodrow’s BBQ to match a case of Tuscaloosa craft beer.

Ivey added a bit more fuel to the fire by calling out Texas for its seating charts and its ticking mechanism surrounding visiting bands. Alabama’s Million Dollar Band will not be making the trip “due to the seating location” at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Alabama hasn’t faced Texas since 2010 in the national championship. For many on the Forty Acres, the term “what if” has more meaning than ever due to the status of quarterback Colt McCoy. During the opening drive, the senior QB was hit on an option run by defensive lineman Marcell Dareus, knocking him out for the remainder of the game. Alabama would go on to win its first national title under Nick Saban in a 37-21 victory.

Kickoff between the two programs is set for noon ET. Alabama enters Saturday’s matchup as a 20.5 favorite over the Longhorns.
