Arkansas coach Sam Pittman discusses Mike Gundy’s regional spring scrimmage idea

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman isn’t opposed to facing other regional, Power 5 programs in an NFL-style scrimmage format.
The idea was originally proposed last week by Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.
“It would be good for us to scrimmage Arkansas,” Gundy said on Tuesday. “You’ve got Nebraska. You’ve got [Texas] A&M.”
Pittman was recently asked about the idea, and seemed open to it.
“I’d be way more interested in doing it this year than I would have last year, if there was no [COVID-19] I’m saying,” Pittman said, via WholeHogSports.com. “Different people do spring ball differently. So, I don’t know that I’d be for that in the first year, but after that I think it could be beneficial, I think.
“It could be beneficial to scrimmage somebody … that you wouldn’t play them for at least five or more years. But I think someone asked coach [Gundy] about that, I thought he gave a great answer on that.”
There are several programs in Arkansas’ region that it could scrimmage, including Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas or other Big 12 schools.
It’s unclear if there’s actual momentum for implementing a spring scrimmage system, but there is a pathway to making this work if schools want to pursue it.
For now, fans and programs will stick with the standard spring game format. Arkansas’ is on April 17.
