Will Muschamp only spent one year as Auburn’s defensive coordinator before heading to South Carolina to take the Gamecocks’ head coaching gig, but that 2015 season was a pivotal one for the Tigers.

According to current Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, much of what Muschamp implemented two years ago is still in place today.

On Tuesday, Steele told reporters that he gives Muschamp a lot of credit for what the Tigers’ defense looks like heading into the 2017 season (via 247Sports.com):

“Make no mistake about it I think Will did an outstanding job of setting the table,” Steele said after Tuesday’s practice.

“Let’s tell it like it is — when we came in a year and a half ago, one of the things I knew from the get go is that they had a lot of change, but the other thing I knew was Will and I are from the same family tree. A lot of the things are very, very similar. Some of the things have changed a little bit or the word had changed. We kept as much of it as we could.”

If Auburn is going to take another step forward this year after making an appearance in the Sugar Bowl last year, Steele’s defense is going to be a big key.

Should the Tigers have a special season, it sounds like Steele will be sure to thank Muschamp once again.
