Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is very interested in the future of the Tigers’ program, but only to a point.
During a Sugar Bowl press conference on Saturday morning, Lashlee said he won’t address anything beyond Auburn’s Jan. 2 matchup against Oklahoma in New Orleans — including Baylor QB transfer Jarrett Stidham.
According to the Ledger-Enquirer, Lashlee deftly avoided questions about a potential 2017 quarterback battle. He said he’s simply worried about getting current starter Sean White ready to play on Monday night:
โSean has prepared for this game,โ Lashlee said. โSean and all of our players are worried about this game. Every year, youโre bringing in players at every position, and so in every offseason, guys know theyโre competing. I think competition brings out the best in everybody, and I donโt think it will be any different next year.โ
Lashlee added that nothing has been decided for next year and that everyone involved will have a fair shot to win the job:
โNot any disrespect to him, but we kind of want to focus on the guys playing in this game, because I think theyโve earned that,โ Lashlee said. โBut Jarrett can obviously throw the ball well and throw it vertically down the field, but heโs going to have to come in, earn the respect of his teammates and earn the right to have a chance to play, just like the guys who are here and will compete as well.โ
Auburn’s Sugar Bowl matchup against the Sooners is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. Central time on Jan. 2. The game can be seen on ESPN.
