When you’re in the sports radio business, hot takes are the name of the game. However, some takes manage to stand out above the rest as perhaps too strong.
On Saturday, comments made by Alabama coach Nick Saban about the Black Lives Matter movement drew criticism.
Bay Area radio host Matt Kolsky saw those comments and fired off a heated take about Saban, basically saying he’d be worthless if it weren’t for football coaching:

Let’s just say Saban had plenty of supporters who fired back at Kolsky over that tweet, pointing out Saban’s history of major charity contributions and action:
There are lazy takes, and then there are diarrhea-of-the-mouth takes like this. What was it, a couple of weeks ago when Saban led the playersโ march much to the chagrin of some in his own fan base who threatened to cancel season tickets? https://t.co/T4gR1gh5vZ

Itโs OK to not like Nick Saban. Plenty donโt. But to call him a dirt bag and say he has no value to society? Heโs built 17 homes through Habitat For Humanity. He gives away hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charities through his foundation.

And I say all that knowing full well Nick Saban doesnโt like me. But that fact doesnโt flavor my coverage of the man or his team. Nor should it.

Look, thatโs fair. Itโs not right to say he has no value to society. Clearly heโs done things for specific people. It infuriates me that heโs saying โall lives matterโ and I think it suggests an insincerity to some of his other behavior.

Kolsky eventually issued an apology, saying his point was that Saban should be more careful with his words:
Ok, folks, Iโm the asshole here so let me apologize…
Itโs unfair of me to attack Nick Saban as a person. He has obviously done a lot for a lot of people. Dumb thing to say. My bad, 100%.
I still believe people in positions like his need to be more careful with words. https://t.co/PP21DrMS7u

Perhaps that’s advice Kolsky should take to heart, too.
