BYU defeated Notre Dame 28-24 last on Saturday night in Provo, though the outcome could have been different if officiated correctly.

Cougars fans stormed the field after CJ Carr’s final pass of the game fell incomplete. In addition to a non-call on a potential pass interference penalty, officials also neglected to realize there was 1 second left on the clock when Carr’s pass hit the ground.

Here’s a clip of the final play:

The potential defensive pass interference is a judgement call, but the clock mishap is not. The Big 12 released a statement acknowledging that Notre Dame should have had 1 more second to run a final play from the 9-yard line:

“Following the Big 12’s review of the final play of Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew,” the Big 12 said in a statement. “The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games.”

As a result of the outcome, Notre Dame drops to 6-1 on the season and may have to go undefeated the rest of the way in order to reach the College Football Playoff.

BYU on the other hand, is now 6-0 and is in position to reach the CFP via either the Big 12’s automatic berth or as an at-large team depending on how the rest of the season plays out for the Cougars.
