The Maryland Terrapins won three straight bowl games from 2021-23 under head coach Mike Locksley. They topped out at eight wins during that stretch. Since then, there’s been much more bad than good in College Park.
Wednesday morning, the Terps fired Locksley, who was in his eighth consecutive season (ninth overall) with the team. The move comes after five consecutive losses against Power 4 opponents, including Saturday’s negative result against a Rutgers team that’s struggling as much as Maryland. Locksley went 39-54 across his Terrapin tenure and will get paid out the remaining $9.75 million he’s owed.
Locksley went 1-5 as Maryland’s interim head coach in 2015. He spent three years on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama before returning to the Terps in 2019. COVID impacted the beginning of his second stint in College Park, but he rebounded from those struggles to post 7-6, 8-5 and 8-5 records, with victories in the Pinstripe Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl and Music City Bowl to cap those campaigns.
From 2024 onward, though, Maryland has not been able to find its footing. The Terps are a combined 2-20 in Big Ten play over the past two-plus seasons. Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will serve as the Terrapins’ interim coach for the rest of the year. Maryland faces Illinois on Halloween (noon ET, FS1) after its Week 8 bye.
