Billy Napier, at the SEC spring meetings in Destin on Tuesday, updated reporters on the status of Florida quarterback DJ Lagway as the signal caller continues to recover from a nagging shoulder injury.

The rising sophomore showed tremendous promise after taking over for the injured Graham Mertz in 2024. Now, in 2025, with pressure on the Gators to get back to the top of the SEC, Lagway will be the key figure.

“He actually threw today,” Napier said. “(He’s been throwing) 3 days a week (and) making really good progress.”

Napier was then asked if Lagway was back to 100 percent health.

“I don’t know if we can put a percentage on it right now, but he’s where he needs to be to continue to progress,” he replied.

As a true freshman, Lagway threw for 1.915 yards and 12 touchdowns, despite 9 interceptions. His first career start came against Samford, a game that saw him finish with 456 yards and 3 touchdowns.

His shoulder injury, though, limited him during spring camp. He also suffered a hamstring injury that forced him out of Florida’s game against Georgia. He returned 2 weeks later against LSU, however.

The Gators played to a 6-1 record with Lagway as a starter.
