Brent Venables and Oklahoma had little trouble with Illinois State in Week 1, opening up a 21-0 halftime lead over the Redbirds en route to a 35-3 win in Norman.

Week 2’s opponent, Michigan, will prove much more difficult. But it might not involve Jaydn Ott, who was limited against Illinois State due to a shoulder injury.

On Tuesday, Brent Venables gave a promising update on the prognosis on the former Cal standout.

“He was banged up last year, he was banged up in camp, but looks to be close to 100%,” Venables said. “And when he’s at his best, we’ve all seen people that know his journey, what he’s capable of. So he’s a real weapon, and I think he’ll play a real factor in our season moving forward. So I’m excited about that, to have another weapon like that on our offense.”

Ott’s body of work speaks for itself. He was one of the nation’s top running backs in 2023, totaling nearly 1,500 total yards and 14 touchdowns that season. However, he was held back by an ankle injury in 2024 that limited him to just over 600 yards from scrimmage and 5 touchdowns. He was credited with a single carry in his Sooners debut against Illinois State.
