A bad day for Oklahoma Sooners fans became worse shortly following Oklahoma’s 17-10 loss at Michigan Saturday afternoon.

According to OU head coach Brent Venables, star linebacker Kip Lewis “will miss some time” after suffering what appeared to be a non-contact injury in the first half. Lewis attempted to re-enter the game but was shut down for the remainder of the evening after persistent pain.

Venables didn’t have more information than that and mentioned that he did not know the specifics of the injury.

This is obviously a massive loss for the Sooners, who now sit at 1-1 on the year with a considerable loss of momentum heading into road matchups at Georgia and Texas (Dallas) starting the week after next. Lewis, a team captain, was an All-SECย second-team preseason pick heading into the year after collecting a team-high 76 tackles with 4 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss in 2025. The 5th-year senior decided to return to Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility instead of entering the 2026 NFL Draft.

With Lewis now out indefinitely, expect Owen Heinicke to move to WILL linebacker with Cole Sullivan shifting to the MIKE position in the Sooners’ defense. Other options include junior James Nesta and Taylor Heim to receive more playing time.
