Brian Kelly provides updates for Aaron Anderson, Garrett Nussmeier and others heading into bye week
Brian Kelly’s LSU team was riding high before a stinging Week 5 loss at Ole Miss dropped the Tigers from the ranks of the unbeaten.
What it also did was drop LSU 9 spots from No. 4 to No. 13 in the latest AP Poll, and the Tigers will have 2 weeks to think about that loss because they’re heading into a bye week.
On Wednesday, Kelly shared some bye week updates on some key players during his time with reporters, highlighted by the situations with star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and wide receiver Aaron Anderson. During the SEC Coaches Teleconference, Kelly revealed that Anderson was unable to finish the Ole Miss game because of several injury issues, including his hip, toe and knee, but that the junior should be fine to play against South Carolina on Oct. 11.
“He’s banged up,” Brian Kelly said. “If we were playing Saturday, he would probably answer the bell, but he’s going to benefit greatly from the week off.”
Kelly also said that leading rusher Caden Durham should be good to go against the Gamecocks after missing the Ole Miss game because of an ankle injury. The coach said that Durham was much better in practice on Wednesday.
As far as Nussmeier, Kelly said that his senior signal-caller is getting rest this week during the bye. Michael Van Buren took all of the first-team reps in practice on Wednesday.
LSU will try to come back refreshed in a few weeks when the Tigers host South Carolina at Death Valley. From what Kelly said on Wednesday, he’s trying everything in his power to make sure that happens.
