Bruce Arians shares mantra he learned from legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant
Bruce Arians will be coaching in the Super Bowl this weekend, and he’ll be holding on to a mantra he learned from Bear Bryant all the way back in the early 1980s.
At his first Super Bowl press conference earlier this week, Arians was asked about coaches who influenced him along the way. Bryant was one of two coaches who he highlighted.
“The last thing he told me when I was going off to Temple – coach them hard and hug them later,” Arians told reporters, via AL.com. “And that’s been my mantra ever since.
That advice has clearly been impactful for Arians, who has been coaching for nearly 40 years since he left Tuscaloosa for the Temple job. He took over the Owls’ program after the 1982 season.
Arians returned to Alabama briefly in 1997 to be the Tide’s offensive coordinator, but most of his career has taken place in the NFL. He’s served as either an NFL assistant or head coach since 1998.
He’ll try to lead Tom Brady to another Super Bowl win vs. the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. ET.
