Auburn figures to go with Bo Nix as its starting QB in Week 1 of the 2021 season.
But, LSU transfer TJ Finley will be there waiting in the wings in case Nix struggles. He’s reportedly been playing well so far in Auburn’s camp.
On Wednesday, coach Bryan Harsin weighed in on using a 2-quarterback system this fall, saying there’s always one starter until 2 are necessary (via Rivals.com):
โLet me say this, itโs always one guy until itโs not. Thatโs my opinion on it, right,โ said Harsin, who used a two-quarterback system at Boise State four years ago.
Harsin went on to say that Nix is taking first-team reps and would start a game if one were to be played right now:
โBo is rolling with the blues right now, so heโs taking the No. 1 reps,โ said Harsin. โAnd just like I said before, going back to that second scrimmage, I thought Bo did a great job, you know, the third downs, the decision-making. Those have been emphasized by Coach Bobo. I feel like TJ โ TJ has really come on. TJโs starting to โ I think heโs played, but he hadnโt been in this system through the spring, and he didnโt have all that time, so just through the practices that weโve had, things are starting to click for TJ. I like where heโs at. I like his mentality. I think TJโs got really command of the huddle and Boโs done a really good job with that as well.
โBoth those guys have been pushing each other. But Bo is rolling with the blues right now. If we played a game right now, Bo would be starting.โ
Still, Harsin’s comments seem to indicate Finley could at least see some action this fall, especially if Nix struggles at all.
