Tennessee will play two quarterbacks — junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano — in Saturday’s home opener against Indiana State, head coach Butch Jones confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
Jones said after practice that the Vols are “gonna need to play both quarterbacks,” according to a report from 247 Sports’ Wes Rucker.
Here is an excerpt from that report:
โAgain, we have two very, very quality quarterbacks,โ Jones said. โAnd for us, you know, weโre gonna need to play both quarterbacks. I think you see the dynamics, again, that surround college football, and you need more than one quarterback. So, again, itโs getting Jarrett the ample reps that he needs to perform on Saturdays, along with Quinten. And, you know, the way we practice with our practice structure really allows for that to happen.
โWeโre gonna play both quarterbacks on Saturday.โ
Dormady played every snap of Tennessee’s Week 1 game against Georgia Tech. He finished 20-of-37 with 221 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Dormady’s intended receivers dropped six passes on Monday. The junior QB was 12-of-17 in the second half.
โThought he did some good things, and obviously many things to improve upon, as well,โ Jones reportedly said. โBut you always look at a starting quarterback as like a starting pitcher in baseball โ youโre gauged upon your win/loss record.”
The Volunteers and Sycamores kick off at 4 p.m. ET on the SEC Network Saturday.
