It may have been second down and 22, but it was a scoring down for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Showing speed that resembled a second or third gear, WR Jaylen Waddle caught an 87-yard touchdown pass from Mac Jones after he caught the football at the 50-yard line and left defenders in the dust. It made the score 42-17 with 7:24 left in the third quarter. That gave him five catches for 142 yards receiving in the game. That long TD came after Waddle shook off an injury that caused him to visit the injury tent on the sideline.
This isn’t the first time Jones and Waddle have connected for a long TD. They also did it in 2018 against Louisiana for 94 yards.
Long touchdowns were a feature for Alabama on Saturday as Jones also had an 78-yarder early in the game, and the defense made a 47-yard Pick Six.
It’s starting to be a big year for Waddle after he had eight catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns last week in the win at Missouri.

Mac Jones’ 87-yard touchdown to Jaylen Waddle is tied for the fifth-longest scoring play in Alabama history. The duo also owns a 94-yard score vs. Louisiana in 2018 that’s tied for the second-longest.
