CBS Sports named its top head coaches from each conference for Week 2 on Monday morning, and not surprisingly the SEC head coach who received top billing resides in Austin.
That’s right, it was Steve Sarkisian, who led Texas to a signature victory in program history, a 24-23 comeback win over then-No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday night in Austin. Sarkisian’s Longhorns trailed the Buckeyes, 23-3, going into the 4th quarter, but then Arch Manning and Co. took over and turned the college football world on its ear.
Sarkisian was at the controls the whole way, both in bad times, as Texas struggled mightily in the first 3 quarters to get anything going offensively, and then in good times, when the 4th quarter happened and the Ohio State defense couldn’t do a thing about it.
Texas was rewarded for the massive win on Sunday by rising to No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches polls, so Sarkisian is now the caretaker of the top team in the land — for now, at least. On Monday, it was CBS Sports’ turn to reward Texas and Sarkisian for what it did on Saturday night.
The other notable head coaches to be recognized were Michigan’s Kyle Whittingham, who led the Wolverines to a stunning upset of Oklahoma and was named the top Big Ten head coach of Week 2, and Oklahoma State’s Eric Morris, whose Cowboys shocked Oregon. For his efforts, Morris was named the top Big 12 head coach of Week 2.
