Texas Longhorns defensive end Colin Simmons is no stranger to racking up sacks. Last season, his 12 QB takedowns led the SEC and tied for fifth-most in the country. In Week 4, he got after it in a whole new fashion.
Simmons dominated the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday afternoon, sacking Faizon Brandon five times in Texas‘s 20-17 victory. The junior defender led the way for a Longhorns defense that harassed the Vols’ true freshman passer the entire game.
In the process, he tied Texas’ single-game sack record and became the first player in SEC history to notch five sacks vs. another SEC opponent, per Radar360.
Simmons got penalized for “simulating using the restroom” early in Saturday’s game, but there’s no denying he made waste of Tennessee’s offensive line. He and his teammates combined for 10 sacks against the Volunteers, who had a chance to steal a win late following a successful onside kick.
Texas (4-0, 1-0 SEC) picked up its second top-25 victory of the season by beating Tennessee (3-1, 0-1 SEC). Simmons and the Longhorns now get a bye week to prepare for their Red River Rivalry matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 10 (3:30 p.m. E.T.). The Volunteers will regroup and host Auburn on Saturday, Oct. 3 (3:30 p.m. E.T.).
