College football player punched in the crotch during bowl game

Bowl Season is, in many ways, the best part of the college football calendar, as it brings out a different level of competitive spirit in the programs that worked hard enough in the regular season to play in a postseason matchup

Sometimes this competitive spirit can go a bit too far, though, and this was put on full display on Thursday night in the Sun Bowl between the Duke Blue Devils and the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Things got a little testy early on in the second half when ASU defensive lineman Justin Wodtly got caught under a pancake block from Duke offensive lineman Justin Pickett. Wodtly apparently took exception to how long it was taking Pickett to get off of him, and decided to let him know with a blow below the belt.

This less-than-sportsmanlike altercation didn’t end in a penalty being called on Wodtley, but Pickett and the Blue Devils ended up getting the last laugh by handing the Sun Devils a 42-39 loss out in El Paso.

This caps off one of the best seasons in recent memory for Duke as they secured their ninth win for the first time since 2014, just a few weeks removed from winning their first ACC Championship since 1989.

Pickett had to go through a bit more pain than his teammates in order to secure the victory, but the reward was well worth it in the end for the redshirt junior.
